I JUST GOT VOLUNTEERED TO COACH MY KIDS SOCCER TEAM... WHAT DO I DO NOW?

Has this ever happened to you or someone you know? So when the question came up from my 5 year old daughter and her crew, I really just said yes to keep them quiet (you know how our kids are). I dove into my first coaching position headfirst and I didn’t have a clue. I would come home after work and…

  • Spend hours on end searching on the internet for tips, strategies and answers to my questions
  • drive around the neighborhood looking for any soccer teams practicing and playing to the wee hours of the night
  • Try to time it to where I could catch a coach off to himself so that I could pick his brain about the  game of soccer and how to coach

Does this sound familiar?

I soon realized it was more to it than just kicking the ball in the net; it was a bonafide sport made up of athletes, personalities and the beautiful game itself. I finally mustered up enough courage to get out and introduce myself and dive in with some basic questions about the game, coaching style and the positions of the players. You may think it’s funny and say that this guy don’t have a clue… well I didn’t.

Growing up, the game of soccer was not being played much in my neighborhood, so my experiences were very limited. You see I played football (American-NFL, College) and ran track, so the people around me knew of some of my athletic accomplishments however this was different (coaching soccer) and boy was I right. It took me watching the World Cup when Mia Hamm and the guy from Brazil (Ronaldo) was playing that I took some interest in the game. Well, I did like Pele’ (what a cool name!) when I was growing up however there you have it; my soccer experience.

Fast forward to why you are here, I took all of the research, questions and driving around the neighborhoods watching games and developed this resource tool about coaching soccer for you to use, learn and share with others, that has been volunteered to coach a soccer team. Please place your name and email in the box to the right and immediately check your email  to get started.
